West River United Church seeks a family and youth ministry program coordinator to direct and oversee youth and family ministry, fellowship and recreation events for children, youth and families as well as community outreach. The deadline for applications is noon on August 3, 2018. This is a part-time contract for 13 hours a week beginning the end of August 2018.

 

Job Description:

This individual is a part of the Christian Education team of staff and volunteers that is working to fulfil our mission of “Worshiping God and celebrating our faith by creating a Christian community to work and grow together in love, fellowship and service as we search for a more abundant life in Christ." The coordinator will contribute to our mission by organizing the ministry and reaching out to the wider community to help recruit and sustain youth and family participation.

To lead the development and delivery of the Sunday School along with family and youth programs at West River United Church (WRUC), the coordinator is to provide:

  • the framework and resources necessary for planning and programming Sunday School, annual Vacation Bible School, youth group along with family and youth outreach programs;
  • coordination and organization of volunteers to deliver these programs;
  • leadership of the youth program and activities;
  • advice, suggestions and logistical support, as needed by the volunteers; and,
  • information to the congregation on the events and activities of our Sunday School and Youth.

This is a part-time contract opportunity for an individual who is interested in children, youth and family ministry, and in gaining leadership experience while exploring life through faith in Jesus Christ.

Responsibilities:                                                              

Sunday School for Children

·         works with the Christian Education Committee, volunteer teachers and the minister to provide a weekly Sunday School program and nursery for children ages 0-12. (Sundays);

  • Maintain a roster of Sunday School teachers and schedule for all classes – on occasion, the  coordinator may need to be a last-minute supply teacher;
  • Plans a 10-month calendar of programs and activities to be implemented by volunteer Sunday School teachers, resource persons, and special guests.
  • Fosters the development of, and supports, volunteer teachers by assisting them in the planning and use of the current Sunday School curriculum, and by providing schedules, programming information, supplies and assistance, as required.
  • Communicates regularly with staff, parents, and members of the congregation on Sunday School plans and activities via telephone calls, face-to-face, bulletin announcements, newsletter articles, website and/or social media.
  • In collaboration with the Minister and teachers, leads, plans, and organizes involvement of the children in Sunday worship services and special events within the congregational life, including the annual Sunday School Christmas pageant (approx. 20 minutes) in a December worship service.

Ministry with Youth

  • Works with members of the congregation, and youth, ages 12-18 years, to develop, plan, and coordinate regular activities (10 months/year) to involve them in the life and work of the local church and wider church (conference and camps);
  • Leads discussion and activities for youth for weekly group;
  • Fosters connections for youth with each other and the community through occasional outreach activities;
  • In collaboration with the Minister, plans and carries out periodic involvement of the youth in Sunday worship services and special events within the congregational life ;
  • Communicates regularly with staff, parents, and members of the congregation on Sunday School plans and activities via telephone calls, face-to-face, bulletin announcements, newsletter articles, website and/or Facebook postings and annual report submissions.

Outreach and Fundraising

·         Seek out opportunities to identify and support community needs that align with our WRUC mission;

·         Explore funding opportunities to support the ministry.

Education /Training and Skills

  • Is a baptized lay person
  • Christian Development training and/or experience related to children, youth program development.
  • Experience working in leadership roles with children and/or youth programs.
  • Experience working in a United Church of Canada setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with people of all ages

·         Competent with communicating through social media and written communication. Good verbal communication skills on many levels - phone, one on one, small groups, and speaking to larger groups.

·         Must have the ability to relate to both youth and adults

  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills
  • Ability to work independently

Working Conditions

  • Will require evening and weekend hours (including most Sundays);
  • Flexibility in hours worked throughout the week and the church year;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision to fulfil program outcomes.

Terms of Employment

  • The initial contract is for 13 hours a week until the end of June 2019.
  • Contract renewal for August 2019 to September 2020 term may available based on demonstrated outcomes and successful funding.
  • Driver`s licence required
  • Current (within the past 6 months) Police Records Check, Level II is required.
  • Start date to be negotiated with successful applicant.

Outcomes

·         Recruit and develop adult and youth volunteers for programming with training and fellowship events for Sunday School and VBS volunteers

·         Be a positive presence in the community beyond our doors

·         Growth in participation of current programs for youth and families and growth in stewardship among participating youth and families

 

Reporting Relationship

  • The coordinator will be overseen by the CE committee through monthly meetings to direct the priorities and evolving nature of the work;
  • The coordinator is accountable to the Church Council through the Ministry and Personnel Committee, which will provide oversight, ensure good working relations, and serve as a resource in times of conflict.
  • The coordinator will be part of the staff team, and will be supported by regular meetings with the minister.

Salary: $20.00 to $22.00 per hour for 13 hours per week plus 4%
