Job Opportunity: Family and Youth Ministry Coordinator
West River United Church (WRUC) is seeking a family and youth ministry coordinator (FYMC) to direct and oversee youth and family ministry, fellowship and recreation events for children, youth and families. The position is for 20 hours per week and requires flexible working hours including some evenings and most Sundays.
Job Description:
This role seeks to assist the congregation to achieve two of their top priorities, the growth of Children, Youth, and Families ministry and sharing our faith with the broader community. The FYMC will work in collaboration with the Ordained Minister and the Christian Education team (CEC) to support our faith community.
Responsibilities:
Sunday School for children and youth
Collaborate with the CEC, volunteer teachers, and the minister to deliver a theologically suitable Sunday School program for children.
Manage a roster and schedule of Sunday School teachers and be ready to step in as a substitute teacher when necessary.
Offer pastoral and spiritual support to children, youth and their families as required.
Foster the development of volunteer teachers by assisting them in the planning and using of the Sunday School curriculum, providing them with schedules, program information, necessary supplies, and support.
Keep staff, parents, and congregation members informed about Sunday School plans and activities through various communication channels such as phone calls, in-person meetings, bulletin announcements, newsletter articles, and social media.
Children, Youth and Families Ministry:
Work directly with the CEC)to develop programs specifically for children and youth and create intergenerational connections.
Collaborate to design and implement weekly, monthly, and seasonal activities for youth and families within the congregation. These initiatives should also aim to engage and attract the broader community.
Develop and maintain connections with young adults in the faith community and provide spiritual and pastoral support to children, families, and youth as needed.
Provide pastoral care to youth and families in the community providing support during periods of change, transition, and crisis.
Collaborate with the ordained minister and other members of the congregation to develop intergenerational worship services periodically throughout the year.
Church Community and Outreach:
Represent the United Church in the larger community and maintain active involvement in the life of the wider church and the Fundy St. Lawrence Dawning Waters Region.
Work in collaboration and support Social Justice and Outreach initiatives to continue supporting the process of WRUC becoming an affirming ministry and working for justice and inclusion.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate will be a lay person, diaconal minister, or order of ministry student who has experience in this type of ministry. Although some theological education is desirable, formal accreditation is not required.
Proven ability to build community connections and experience in providing pastoral care to people in various stages of life.
Strong leadership skills, including the ability to facilitate team development and work collaboratively with a diverse group of individuals.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to listen actively and empathetically.
Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute successful events, programs, and other initiatives.
Experience working with children and youth, and a strong commitment to nurturing their faith development.
Familiarity with the United Church of Canada and its values, theology, and liturgy.
Proficient in the use of technology and social media for communication and outreach.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Working Conditions:
Will require evening and weekend hours (including most Sundays).
Flexibility in hours worked throughout the week and the church year.
Ability to work with minimal supervision to fulfil program outcomes.
Active participation is expected in most CEC and WRUC Council meetings, typically held once a month.
Terms of Employment:
The initial contract will be for a 3-year period with possibility of extension based on demonstrated outcomes and future needs of the church.
Driver`s license is required.
Current (within the past 6 months) Police Records Check, Level II is required.
Start date to be negotiated with successful applicant.
Salary: $22.00 - $26.00 per hour (Unless otherwise specified by the United Church of Canada based on experience and training)
